El recurso africano en el indie actual se ha extendido con cierto talante moroso. Una vez más, el demonio blanco recurría a la fuente primera para revitalizar un pop ahogándose en la homogeneidad, sin una verdadera voluntad por entender o dar a conocer el rico acervo musical del continente, apenas nutriéndose del mero exotismo, un concepto completamente etnocentrista. Hay excepciones, claro, y Damon Albarn es una de ellas. Si algo se respira en sus repetidas aventuras en Mali y ahora en la República Democrática del Congo, es una genuina curiosidad y la voluntad de establecer un diálogo de igual a igual entre músicos procedentes de varias culturas. Sé que suena a mamarrachada namasté, pero qué le vamos a hacer. El debut de DRC Music se grabó en cinco días, con productores británicos y americanos (Richard Russell, capo de XL Recordings, Jneiro Jarel y Dan The Automator, entre otros hasta diez) y músicos locales. De ahí que “Kinshasa One Two” suene fresco y bullicioso, menos un disco que una colección de intercambios imperfectos. Sólo “Halo”, necesario single con gancho estratégicamente colocado al inicio del álbum, puede ser considerada una canción en el sentido occidental del término. El resto, por supuesto, es mucho mejor.
My organization, DKT International, is havnig growing success in the DRC with IUDs, another non-hormonal method. While we recognize the challenge of promoting IUDs due to long-standing misconceptions and misinformation, we have noticed that the cost to the client is a factor in choosing between IUD and implants, two long-term methods. If the products are free, women will likely choose implants. If they have to pay, they will choose the less expensive IUDs. DKT works with community mobilizers to educate women in the community or waiting in clinics on modern family planning methods with a special emphasis on long-term methods. These mobilizers also refer women at clinics trained by DKT for family planning services. One of our clinics in Bandundu Province inserts an average of 40 IUDs per month. In our training programs we spend a significant amount of time focusing on the advantages of long term methods (including IUDs), counseling and managing side effects related to IUDs and insertion and removal. We also make sure to mention IUDs as an effective method of emergency contraception. The percentage of DKT's total Couple Years of Protection derived from IUDs in the DRC has more than doubled from 2011 to 2012, and we expect that trend to continue.
