El cambio empezó a trazarse en su anterior trabajo el irregular “The Crane Wife” y sobre todo en canciones como la progresiva “When The War Came”, pero es en este “The Hazards Of Love” donde la mutación se ha hecho de una realidad tan pasmosa como rotunda. Lejos del folk-rock acústico, pastoral y de inspiración Británica de “ Picaresque”, Colin Meloy nos golpea en los morros con una opereta rock de inspiración gótica y algo grotesca que mucho tiene que ver con los viejos discos de Jethro Tull o Procol Harum, aunque esta sea una afirmación que provocará sarpullidos en más de uno. No te espantes. Si no le tienes alergia a los pasajes instrumentales de inspiración setentera, roquera y algo épica más propia de Rush que de Belle And Sebastian, déjate seducir por esta historia de bosques encantados, secuestros y asesinatos.
Ya veras como si dejas todos tus prejuicios a un lado, te encontrarás ante un disco perfectamente tramado en el que las canciones –en especial las cuatro partes del tema que da título al disco y sobre todo la última “The Drowned” que rezuma una belleza única- se suceden creando una atmósfera de irrealidad que va pasando por diversos estados y en el que no faltan guitarrazos de auténtico lujo (la guitarra de Chris Funk suena desatadamente clásica en los riffs que dan lugar a canciones crudas como “ The Abduction Of Margaret”) y en el que los diversos invitados (Shara Worden de My Brightest Diamond, Becky Stark de Lavender Diamond, Jim James de MMJ o la guitarra de Robyn Hitchcock) cumplen perfectamente con el papel asignado.
We are fighting a war bruohgt about by the "messianic" desire of Islam to rule the world. It is not a bunch of people who have misunderstood Islam, or Islamic radicals, or hijackers of Islam. We are at war with Islam. And though not all Muslims are at war with us all the time, they can at any moment, become Jihadis. There are also some who are not Jihadis, but still do their bit in the Jihad by financial and other means. Now how do we get to the political situation that we recognise that we are at war - not an external or internal war or even both, but war - war. I believe that we are heading towards that situation, step by step. Fort Hood, demos in Wootton Bassett, and Luton, are slowly making people realize that we are in a general war. It will take one big one, and a few more Fort Hoods and Lutons, for that realization to come about. Once we get there, then the internal Jihad, the demographic one being the most dire, will be bruohgt to a halt. The external war will be dealt with in the normal manner.
